Open Garage Door Alert from the Omaha Police Department

Don Smith was awarded a plaque as “MTPG Patroller of the Year” at the Omaha Police Department’s Seventeenth Annual Citizen Patrol Banquet. This award was given for the many hours Don spent working to make our neighborhood safer. He has been the back bone behind putting out the Neighborhood Directory that all patrollers use. He is a regular resource for up-to-date information from the Omaha Neighborhood Center. He is a member of the Board for MTPG representing Parkside. As a patroller, Don has assisted with regular patrol duty, first days of school, last days of school, Halloween patrol and also helped with the Montclair School one-way street patrol. Don has always shown he is willing to help whenever and wherever he can.

The Banquet was held at the Westside Community Conference Center. It was sponsored by the Omaha Police Officers’ Association, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #1, AAA Nebraska and Cornhusker Motor Club. In attendance were keynote speaker Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy, Mayor Jim Suttle, new Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer, Rose White (AAA Nebraska), MTPG’s honored Police Officer of the Year, Captain Greg Gonzales (South West Precinct Capt.), OCCP President Liz Davenport and many of the Omaha Police Department’s finest officers. The OPD Explorer Unit helped with duties around the event.

The evening festivities were emceed by Sgt. Erin Dumont, OPD liaison to OCCP, who introduced the very sharp OPD honor guard and the singing of the national anthem by Officer Carma Gunter.

I want to offer my special congratulations to Don Smith for the award he so earned by his every day actions. I also want to thank all MTPG Patrollers (OCCP) who give of their time and at their own expense to make our neighborhoods and city a better place to live.

If you want to become a member of this much needed group of volunteers, the next OCCP training class is scheduled for Oct. 24. Being a good neighbor should be the goal of every member of our neighborhoods.
