Did you know: About Hell Creek

Hell Creek as its name precedes it, is the small creek that runs through Trendwood Park, starting in Boys Town and winds its way south in to the Papio Creek. Legend has it a settler who often made the trip to Omaha for supplies dubbed it “Hell Creek” due to the number of wagons its muddy banks claimed as victims.

Our stretch of Hell Creek may not be terribly treacherous, however, as described in the flood of 1964, “…reports noted that Hell Creek was fifty feet wide and had five-foot waves. Houses were moved from their foundations and garages were destroyed by these floodwaters. After some channel improvements earlier in 1965, the September 7, 1965, flood event on Hell Creek nearly equaled the severity of the 1964 event.” While some of that may be down stream, this is certainly not a creek you want to cross.

The city has tried in the past to keep maintenance of Hell Creek to a minimum as described here, and it would seem, despite concern of neighbors, the city has moved forward with the bidding process: http://cityclerk.cityofomaha.org/images/stories/agenda/ID%2014_09_30/Public%20Works/1236.pdf

Menacing as its name, this is certainly a creek one would not want to cross.
